nelson, tells wjz, that artie is still playing football. just this time up there on the big field. back to you on tv hill. art donovan is survived by his wife of 57 years. dottie and five children. a standoff in charles county leaves one person injured. denise is live in the newsroom with the latest for us. it happened in waldorf, just a few hours ago. they were serving a search warrant when they came across an armed occupant. there was an exchange of gunfire. and the gunman was shot multiple times. emergency crews flew that man i critical condition. neighbors were evacuated during the confrontation. but are now allowed back in their homes. reports indicate that the man was suspected of committing mail fraud and was being investigated by the u.s. postal service. updating the breaking news, a terrifying scene.

small plane crashes into the home. two are missing. and investigators are trying to determine just how many people were on the plane. adriana diaz has the latest for wjz. >> two homes caught fire, after the twin-engine plane went down in a residential neighborhood, not far from the tweden new haven airport. firefighters started quickly searching for survivors. >> there are reports that two children were in the house. there are reports that there were 1 to 3 people on the plane. so far, on a visual inspection only, we've been able to identify two bodies. >> reporter: connecticut governor dan malloy says it will take sometime to recover victims because the fuselage of the plane is in the basement of the house. one neighbor said he ran to help, when he heard a woman screaming her kids were inside. he said they couldn't find the children. and when the flames got too intense, he had to drag the woman out. the missing children are believed to be one and 13 years old. >> and it's awful. i never want to see that plane

again. >> the plane was in contact with air traffic control in the connecticut area. >> all we know is that it missed the approach and continued on. and there were no distress calls. >> a team from the national transportation safety board is headed to the scene to help investigate. adriana diaz, wjz eyewitness news. >> and one neighbor says he did not hear any engine noise before the plane crashed. just a loud noise. then a thump. stepping up security. several recent crimes at johns hopkins school of medicine in east baltimore, put police and hospital officials on alert. wjz is live. linh bui explains these new precautions. linh? kai, since mid-july, several employees have been attacked or robbed near campus. but these new security measures should make it safer. >> reporter: a vonger police presence around johns hopkins. more foot and bike patrols along north wolf and north

washington street. >> i noticed that johns hopkins security guards, every time i go up that way. they're coming further and farther down. it might help the community. >> plans for increased security. and a security kiosk outside student apartments on north wolf. three different incidents led to this increase in security. one person's cell phone was stolen. another person was robbed. and a third person was assaulted. >> reporter: hopkins gave wjz this statement. our security department takes all crimes very seriously. and they act quickly to ensure the well being and comfort of patients, family and staff. >> it's a little disturbing. you know, it's hard to keep your personal things safe. >> reporter: police say the majority of robberies in the city are cell phone related. so always be aware of your surroundings. >> make sure they're walking in well-lit areas. that they walk in groups whenever possible. that's not advertising the fact that they have a cell phone. we don't want to see anybody become the victim of a crime.

used his 25th white house conference. >> it's right to ask about surveillance, particularly as technology is reshaping every aspect of our lives. >> reporter: the president says he will appoint a panel of outside experts to tackle the big questions about the balance between national security and americans' privacy. >> and they'll consider how we can maintain the trust of the people. how we can make sure that there is absolutely no abuse in terms of how these surveillance technologies are used. >> reporter: the panel will present its findings to the president in 96 days. and he will send recommendations to congress on ways to increase tranparency. >> nsa leaker edward snowden has leaked things that have rattled the public's trust. >> our decision to not participate in the summit was

america runs on dunkin. kristy, thank you. the raging wildfire in southern california has now consumed 25 square miles. it is burning 90 miles east of los angeles, expanded by about 2,000 acres overnight. but it is 25% contained. 1400 firefighters, nine helicopters are working around the clock to contain this blaze. six people have been injured, including five firefighters. the fire has forced hundreds of residents to evacuate. well, seeing that, we can say, scorched earth. that's what new images from nasa satellites are showing across the world. hotter, dryer conditions are fueling more wildfire. and scientists are worried about the future. >> reporter: destructive wildfires are burning across southern california, with winds pushing the flames into timbered dry woodlands. hundreds flee as fire consumes

their businesses and their homes. extornado -- extended periods of triple-digit conditions have fueled wildfires from alaska to new mexico. it is something nasa has had its eye on all summer long, with these dramatic satellite images. >> we're living in a warmer world and a dryer world. when we have dryer world, there's more areas susceptible to fire. >> they follow a simple but dangerous continue. -- condition. hotter conditions bus plus more people in the world equals greater chance there will be more wildfires. this nasa projection shows the fire threat from 1990, through today, and up through the year 2100. >> the areas in red. for areas across north america and the united states, that we think are going to be more prone to fire over time. so you can see, they're areas you are used to seeing fires am but look at the midwest, the great plains. these are areas that we don't

a live look outside. we are told there are wind restrictions on the bay bridge now. and bob knows exactly why. i tell you why, because there's a thunderstorm directly over the bay bridge right this minute. one that moved through our region has now shifted to the

eastern shore. take a look at radar. that line of storms, pretty much from galena and chestertown two queenstown. you can see that storm sitting over the bay bridge. they have gusty winds, 30 to 40 miles an hour. and you folks in queenstown. it's right on top. annapolis is just moving to the east. another brief shower, west of severna park. for the most part, the activity has shifted to theurn upper eastern shore. and will continue to move off into delaware over the next hour or two. so you folks in dover, denton, easton, topper county, caroline county, tell be affecting you in the next 30 to 45 minutes with brief downpours and gusty winds wind in some spots. temperature-wise, if you did get a shower, you're probability near 70 to 80. d.c. hasn't seen the rain. 90 yet in houston. 83 in elkton. with shower activity cooling down there.

72, cool spot in oakland. upper 70s to near 80. rock hall getting rain. but last hour, on the hour, they did not report showers. hot spot, south and west, where they have yet to see the showers. we've got a bit of a west wind tomorrow. a west wind will bring in some dryer air for at least, looks like saturday and sunday. going to be a lot nicer than last couple of days, at least humiditywise. lots of rain to our north and northeast. mount washington, almost 6 inches of rain. to our west and southwest. that frontal boundary, crossing the region tonight. scattered showers still possible for the next few hours. then dryer air for the weekend. it will be less humid. you'll feel the difference tomorrow afternoon. sunday, probably the same thing by sunday afternoon. a shower or two can develop just south of the area pretty much south of d.c. west winds at 5 to 10 knots. bay temp, around 77 still. tonight, showers and storms. mainly now to the east of us.

could still see one later on. 72, up to 88 tomorrow. lower humid will make it feel a lot more comfortable, rather than the high humidity we've had the last couple of days. >> that is good. a maryland man celebrates the 30th anniversary of his heart transplant. and as christie ileto explains, this makes him one of the longest surviving heart transplant patients. orlando defeliz knows just how far heart transplants have become. at 28, paddling a serious heart condition, defeliz was fighting to live. >> when i was first told that i was going to need a heart transplant, that was very scary. especially at that time you

know, heart transplants weren't being done. >> reporter: they put the hart of a 16-year-old girl into his chest. >> we knew it was going to work. what we didn't know was how well it would work. >> at the time, it was more risky, more complicated. doctors gave him a 50% chance of surviving his first five years post surgery. >> orlando was a pioneer. >> he didn't perform the surgery, but he's been defeliz's cardiologist for the last 20 years. >> to point people and say this man is alive today. it's a good feeling. >> reporter: this year, defeliz celebrates 30 years of life, post-surgery, becoming one of the nation's longest surviving heart transplant patients, even while receiving a kidney three years ago. >> we have seen firsthand how wonderful organ donation can be and how it can save somebody's life. >> and now, they are asking

it's 5:30. 80 degrees and sunny. good evening. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. the woman who claims years of abuse drove her to hire a hitman to murder her husband continues her fight to avoid

jail time. wjz is live at baltimore county courthouse. derek valcourt was in court and has more on karla porter's defense. derek? >> reporter: well, prosecutors are trying to portray karla porter as a cold and calculating killer. but defense attorneys say she is the victim of horrendous obuse. and today, they called psychologists to talk about it. >> reporter: karla porter says after years of physical and verbal abuse from her husband ray, she felt she had to hire a hitman to kill him. and in march of 2010, that's what she did, with help from some of her family members, she arranged for hitman, walter bishop, to shoot her husband in the head, at the hess gas station. she frantically called 911 and said he was shot by a robber. >> you know the person that -- >> no, i never seen him before [ crying hysterically ] he was black and he just came in the side door. i went out and i came in and -- >> but under pressure during a

police interrogation, she finally confessed. >> are you understanding what we are saying to you? >> i think so. >> we know. we know. we're not stupid. >> after i told you what a wonderful man he was, i didn't want you to know he hit me stims. i just wanted somebody to hit him. i didn't want for any of this to happen, i didn't. >> the abuse she described later was much more severe than he she originally claimed. the psychiatrist says she had severe depression and battered spouse syndrome. >> reporter: the defense team rested their case today. and the judge said that he'll have closing arguments sometime on monday. it's possible a jury could begin their deliberations on the case as late as monday afternoon. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. carla porter faces the possibility of life in prison without parole.

additional charges are filed against the texas man accused of killing four people, injuring four others in separate attacks. vic is in the newsroom with more on this for us. vic? >> reporter: well, mary. erbie bowser, reportedly shot his wife and her two daughters and two other kids. he also went to his estranged wife, killing her and her two boys. he also injured others at the time. he worked for years as a special education teacher. a family member identified him in a lineup. >> the suspect is being held in the dallas county jail. detective the say he is not cooperating. well, prosecutors are nearing the end of the sentencing phase in the court- martial of army private bradley manning. prosecutors have been cawrging manning's actions put two people in danger. the defense will start presenting on monday.

manning faces up to 90 years for releasing classified information through the website wikileaks. the obesity rate for one group of kids is showing signs for improvement. monique griego has more on the new study and what parents need to know. >> reporter: while childhood obese hit continue -- obesity continued to be an epidemic in the u.s. for the first time in years, the obesity rate is showing signs of improvement. >> it's not a hume drop. but it is a really positive step. >> michelle demule-hayes, a pediatrician, says the change is small but significant. the study done by the cdc shows between 2008 and 2011, the obesity rate for low-income children, aims 2 to 4, decreased in 19 of the 43 states measured, including maryland. experts say reaching kids in this age range is especially crucial. >> it's kind of that window of

opportunity where we can really get them before these food habits are ingrained. >> reporter: according to the report in maryland, the obesity rate for low-income preschoolers dropped from 15.7 to 15.3%. demule-hayes says many of the children in the study are on public assistance programs like wic. and within the past few years, wic has also changed its plan to include healthier options. >> we're making strides to make healthy foods more affordable. but there's definitely still a long way to go. and while eating better is part of what is helping kids stay healthy, experts say parents also need to make sure they stay active. monique griego, wjz eyewitness news. >> mount washington hospital offers weight smart programs for children 17 and under that need help getting their weight under control. maryland state police are looking for a man they say stabbed a teenager during a fight. it happened in allegheny

crews had to evacuate. emergency workers are overwhelmed. >> it's been crazy. parts of arkansas have seen more rain than they normally get for the entire month of august. i'd say it's 10 or 12 feet above the creek bed. and the situation could get worse. rain is posted. adriana diaz, wjz eyewitness news. and an oklahoma woman -- man, rather, droo drowned while trying to rescue a relative. officials following a deadly derailment mast last month. the court investigationing this says the train was travissing 100 miles an hour on the stretch that was only 50 miles an hour. they also found the conductor

was talking on the company- issued phone. last month's derailment killed 79 people. there has been a break in the search for a missing california girl. as jarica duncan reports for wjz, a car belonging to the man accused of abducting hannah, was found. and. >> a car belonging to california murder suspect, james dimaggio, has been found in idaho. and police say dimaggio appears to be traveling with the missing 16-year-old, hannah anderson. >> the blue nissan versa, was discovered, covered in brush. the license plates had been removed. >> reporter: the car was found this morning near cascade, idaho, more than 800 miles from san diego. that's where dimaggio's house was found in flames sunday. inside the burned bodies of anderson's mother, christina, and that of a child, believed

to be hannah's 8-year-old brother ethan, who is also listed as missing. the 40-year-old dimaggio was a family friend of the anderson. authorities say he had an unusual infatuation with the girl. police saw two people with camping gear that matched the description of dimaggio and anderson. >> they came back late wednesday night. and upon seeing some news of the missing hannah and dimaggio, contacted local law enforcement. >> reporter: both appeared to be in good health. >> as far as we know, it didn't look like she was being held against her will. >> reporter: on thursday, anderson's father spoke out to dimaggio. >> the damage is done. just let my daughter go. let her go home safe. let her be with me. and try to mend things from there. >> reporter: dimaggio is wanted on suspicion of murder and arson. >> reporter: and dimaggio's car will be examined by bomb and arson experts.

authority his warned earlier that dimaggio may be traveling with home made explosives. three maryland families are suing boeing over the deadly crash of asiana air flight 214. the suit alleges the maker of boeing 777 provided inadequate training to pilots in south korea. a crash survivor is among those suing. the lawsuits also claim that boeing should have added a low air speed warning for pilots. the plane coming from south korea crashed last month, while landing in san francisco, killing three teenagers. terror alert. the state department is warning americans not to travel to pakistan. tina kraus reports for wjz. the terror threat has led to the evacuation of the u.s. consulate. >> reporter: a threat to the u.s. consulate in pakistan's second largest city, lehore, has forced american diplomats out. the u.s. government ordered all
